Road Safety Audit

A Road Safety Audit (RSA) is defined as the formal safety performance examination of an existing or future road or intersection by an independent, multidisciplinary team. It qualitatively estimates and reports on potential road safety issues and identifies opportunities for improvements in safety for all road users.

This formal process is not just an ad-hoc check as examination needs to be conducted at various stages in the development of a project. Thus, the Auditors must be properly qualified and experienced to undertake such task. The team members must not be involved in the design or maintenance of the facility being examined, so that they can have an objective point of view.

The goal of the RSA process is to ensure that all road projects and all existing roads are capable of providing the highest practicable standard of traffic safety for all road users.

It is common to find that safety and operational problems become evident shortly after many new road projects become operational. In most cases these problems could have been anticipated, their causes identified and eliminated, or at least their effects could have been mitigated, at little extra cost if they had been identified at the appropriate stage in the development of the project.

RSA is specifically aimed to achieve this and is therefore very much a “pro-active” approach to road safety.
